Tsomgo Lake, Sikkim

Tsomgo Lake is one of the very famous tourist attractions in Sikkim. Situated at an altitude of 12,210 feet and located at a distance of 38km from Gangtok the Tsomgo Lake, known as 'The Source of the Lake' in Bhutia dialect of the region, the lake can be reached by a two and a half hours bus ride. This one km long oval shaped lake is 50 feet deep. Regarded extremely holy by the locals, the lake is a residence of Brahmini ducks along with being a stopover for various migratory ducks. The beautiful surroundings of the peaceful lake add more charm to it. Placid water, cool breeze and picturesque location make it an ideal picnic spot for people. The lake is held in high esteem by both the Hindus and the Buddhists. It is also known as Changu Lake. The sight of the oval lake surrounded by snow capped mountains is heavenly. Even though the lake is restricted and special permission has to be taken, thousands of tourists visit the lake to get a glimpse of the mesmerizing beauty of the lake. One can take Yak rides on the snow covered ground around the Tsomgo Lake all the while gazing into the crystal clear water of the lake. During winter season the water turns to ice giving a different persona to the lake. The melting snow from the mountains surrounding the lake is the source of water for this lake. Tsomgo Lake gives birth to a river called Lungtze Chu which meets the river Rangpo-chu further down its way. It is said that Lamas used to make predictions about their future by studying the colour of the lake. The dark colour of the river used to indicate problems in future while light colour reflected peace and happiness. If luck favours you, then you can even see a colourful rainbow here. Tsomgo Lake can be visited only by obtaining Inner Line Permit from the Police through the Tourism Department or travel agent.

The Lake during the months of May to August is surrounded by a variety of flowers in bloom such as the rhododendrons, various species of primulas, blue and yellow poppies, irises etc. It is also an ideal habitat for the Red Panda and various species of birds. There is also a small temple built on the side of Tsomgo Lake where locals worship Lord Shiva which is also a part of the allure of the place. There are several shops selling snacks, souvenirs, warm clothes and snow boots along the periphery of the lake. And if you are looking for snow boots and gum boots, they are available here on hire. This is for sure one of the best lakes in India. Summers in Gangtok last from March to June and provide the ideal conditions to visit the place with the temperatures reaching a maximum of 20 degrees. Winters last from November to February and are generally very cold with temperatures falling to 4 degrees. The best time to the visit Tsomgo Lake is from the month of October to March.
