About Sikkim
Located in the eastern Himalayas, Sikkim is bound by Tibet (China) in the north, West Bengal in the south, Tibet and Bhutan in the east and Nepal in the west. The state is spread below Mount Kanchenjunga (8,534 m), the third highest peak in the world. Sikkim is a beautiful scenic location which proves to be a fantasy destination of many a tourist. The original inhabitants of Sikkim, the Lepchas called it Nye-mae-el or `paradise'. Sikkim is the second smallest state in India and is nestled in the Himalayas. A journey to Sikkim necessarily means awakening the senses and discovering the pristine and mystic beauty of the land. What one will find most fascinating is the journey itself-a continuum of sights, sounds, and feelings. Sikkim is a dream that one can realize and enjoy, now that the area is open to all. It is a state cloaked in the mystery of remoteness, and far away from the hustle and bustle of the modern world.
Sikkim is very popular all over the world especially for its adventure tourism, eco-tourism, wildlife tourism, spiritual tourism, cultural tourism, heritage tourism, trek-tourism etc. that lure the tourist to explore the region in all seasons. Some of the famous tourist attractions of Sikkim tourism are Kabi Lungtsok which is a historical place; Singiek is famous for viewing the Mt. Khangchendzonga; Chungthang is famous for two passes Lachen and Lachung; Yumthang for nature lovers; Namtse for the snow capped mountains; Tendong Hill for lush green forests; Ravangla for nature trails; Maenam Hill for scenic view; Borong for beautiful landscape and Varsey for rhododendron sanctuary. Sikkim has four districts, the west district, south district, north district and east district. These districts are further divided into sub districts. There are eight towns and nine subdivisions in Sikkim. Geyzing is the district capital for the west district.
West Sikkim
The west district is characterized by its lush landscape and beautiful scenery consisting of charming lakes and waterfalls. Trekking is popular activity in this part of Sikkim as terrain makes for great trekking routes.
East Sikkim
East district is the most inhabited district of Sikkim with Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim located there. Gangtok is a popular tourist spot and has not become a multi-ethnic and broad-based hub of Sikkim. Here you will find a traditional as well as modern age existing side by side.
South Sikkim
The South district is the smallest of the districts of Sikkim. However, it offers a beautiful view of the mountain ranges that leaves one breathless. It's lovely villages and charming view of the high ranges of mountains makes it a favorite tourist destination.
North Sikkim
The northern district of Sikkim could be called the most beautiful and scenic area. It provides an unforgettable experience to people who love nature. The scenery here can be described as truly exquisite.
Due to its location and altitude, there is an immense variation in climate and vegetation in Sikkim. The best time to visit Sikkim is between mid-March and June but especially, April and May, when the rhododendrons and orchids are in full bloom. During monsoons, from the end of June till early September, rivers and roads become impassable, though plants damaged by the incessant rain spring back to life again and bloom towards the end of August. October, when orchids bloom once again, and November tend to have the clearest weather of all.
