Nathu La Pass is one of major passes in India that was built to connect the Indian state of Sikkim with Tibet. This is one of the ancient routes which were used as the silk route in ancient days. Built at an altitude of 4,310 m or (14,140 ft), it is one of the three trading routes that are located at the border of India and China. The best part of the visit to this pass is the journey itself. The drive on the NH31A, an all-weather metalled road of 114km from Siliguri to Gangtok is filled with never ending scenic views. The green waters of Teesta River on the white sand shores travels with us for more than 33km on this highway. The road leads through conifers and bamboo forests right up to Gangtok. Nathula in north eastern region of India deserves to be called the seventh heaven. It is situated in peaks of Himalayan region and connects Sikkim and China. The culture of Nathula is a mixture between the Sikkimese and Chinese tradition. The Nathula pass is one of the most attracted tourist spot. The name of the place is an amalgamation of two words that is, "Nathu" which means listening ear and "La" meaning a pass. In history, it was a part of the Old Silk Route. It was one of the important routes recognized during the colonial period and most of the trading between China and India was done through the Nathula Pass. This route also avoided Russian invasions of Tibet in 1904. In 1950, after the Republic of China took control of the Tibet, the passes to Sikkim became a way for the refugees. During 1962, Nathula became an area of skirmish. In later years, with the coming of BJP to the centre, the pass was formally opened. This is the ideal place for one to get into adventure sports. This is place is relished by trekkers every year due to serene beauty and high altitude. During winters Nathula is covered with layers of snow. Tourists also visit the Nathula Pass to get a photogenic beauty of the area and to have a glance of the neighboring country. Along with this the place is also known for the flora and fauna which is found in this region. Because of its elevation the region is largely covered with sub tropical forests and shrubs which are scattered over the region. Along with some major species of dwarf rhododendrons and junipers are found. A monument named after Baba Harbajan Singh is located nearer to the Chinese border. He was a soldier who lost his life is 1962 and is considered as important for both Hindus and Muslims. Nathula Pass is open for the tourists 5 days in a week. On Monday & Tuesday Nathula is fully closed. Only Indian nationals are allowed to go to Nathula Pass. Foreign nationals are not allowed to travel to Nathula Pass. They can travel up to Tsomgo Lake (Changu) accompanied by a local guide. Indian nationals also need a permit to visit Nathula Pass. Nathula Pass remains covered with snow most of the time. In winter you can get a heavy snow fall & the temperature can go down to - 250 C. So one has to carry heavy woolen cloths & wind proof while visiting Nathula Pass. Summer ranges May to October in Nathula Pass & temperature remains around 100 C.
